How CorporateStays.com transitioned from a Montreal startup to a company with locations around the world 5615In 2008 Vladimir De Suàrez had an idea for a business while renting out his apartment on Craigslist. Since then De Suàrez has built his furnished housing company, CorporateStays.com from a small Montreal operation to an international venture with locations around the world. Now, we are finally ready for big growth! What inspired you to start CorporateStays.com? I have always loved travelling. Renting spaces to people from all over the world, it's a bit like travel in that you get to know different people and cultures. I also love design and skyscrappers, in fact, CorporateStays.com   Read more…

Eweek : Global Entrepreneurship Week in Montreal, Nov 12-15th 2012 4906An initiative started in 2008 by UK prime minister Gordon Brown and Carl Scharmm, CEO of Kauffman foundation, Global Entrepreneurship Week has since then grown to 115 countries worldwide, with over 24,000 partners participating and 7 million participants. The week is the world's largest celebration of the innovators and startups that bring new creative ideas to life -- similar to other famous initiatives by the foundation such as Startup Weekend. Last year, apart from a UX event at Bolidea and a few user groups meetups, there wasn't really anything going on in Montreal. This year, Toronto gets Startup Weekend, Québec City will also get a Startup Weekend. So what's going on in Montreal? That's where Dawson comes in. The college has taken the bold initiative to get together a wide array of activities and startup events in a 4-days intense and creative entrepreunarial bootcamp, inviting of course their students to   Read more…

Montreal’s TranspoCamp: notes from the field

Montreal’s TranspoCamp: notes from the field 3847Three draft transport apps were presented during the closing ceremonies of TransportCamp 2011, Thursday December 15, at the Maison du developpement durable, in downtown Montreal. The event marked the releasing of important new data by the Agence Metropolitaine de Transport (AMT), the City of Montreal and Communauto, for free use by developers. Marketted as a hackathon, only 10-15 participants actually worked on digi-projects in a back room, labouring around their laptops. The majority of the 100 or so participants gathered in small groups in a large open and naturally lit hallway, to talk about possible projects. A true "unconference", the agendas for each small group were proposed by participants and selected by votes. Representatives from the AMT, Communauto and the City, as well as other transport authorities, were on hand to witness proceeding, listen and speak with students, app developers, citizens and civil society actors, and participate.   Read more…
