ConFoo is one of the most important developer-oriented conferences. ConFoo 2013 will be held on February 25 through March 1 in Montreal, Canada.
The team has opened its call for papers. Candidates can submit proposals until September 23. Consult the call for papers
page for details and to start submitting. That page also explains what expenses ConFoo can cover for speakers. You can also get advice
on how to write proposals.
The call for papers is public, meaning that all proposals get published on the website for others to vote and comment on. This approach allows the organizers to pick subjects that have most interest in the community. The comments are only visible to speakers and organizers to avoid influencing the votes.

3030Confoo.ca has announced they're now accepting applications for sessions for next year's conference
As stated, they're accepting a very broad range of topics, both in technologies as well as in development practices. Technologies include the most popular languages and frameworks, aimed at attracting a large number of developers to the conference, and practices include project management practices, as well as new topics for a developer conference like SEO, social media and startups (!)
Started by php Quebec a while ago to create a large developer conference, confoo is now in the agenda of many technology companies, mainly to get visibility for potential hires. It's the only event in its kind in Canada that offers the opportunity to be in front of many brilliant CSci graduates, and having a session is also a good way for a company to increase their attractiveness.
Last year, confoo also offered workshops and hackathons, available Read more…
3004The Startup Festival was scheduled from wednesday to friday last week, and for those who have been there, it's the best technology conference for Montréal, an event that no-one couldn't miss
The International Startup Festival
is Phil Telio's vision, who after the successful StartupCamp series, dreamt about gathering entrepreneurs and investors from all the world in Montréal. It's the first of its kind in Montreal, and we hope it's not the last!
Andy Nulman, an iconic figure in Montréal, got the Just for Laughs
festival to work with the Startup Festival. Having a "fun moment" was a big part of Phil Telio's vision, and a great match for Montreal. If entrepreneurs had to travel to the city, they might as well (re)discover the city's fun, creativity and uniqueness in North America.
Sponsors could buy Startup Patrons tickets, which gives entry to one starving entrepreneur of their choice, the case of many Read more…
2913If you are using wordpress, then head over next Saturday & Sunday to WordCampMontreal 2011. Of course, the event is also aimed at wordpress designers, wordpress developers, and generally speaking, to anyone who is blogging.
As in previous years, the conference has 2 tracks, one for wordpress development, and another for bloggers. See the schedule here
. Like most conference attendees though, you might find meeting others in hallway and between breaks more interesting than the sessions in themselves.
is also coming up this week, with the highlight during the weekend. It's not a very well-known event, due to its nature as a computer security conference, focusing on reverse engineering and exploitation to Read more…
2145Since its origins as a conference for php developers, ConFoo has evolved into Montréal's biggest web conference for developers, if not Canada's biggest tech conference. They've unveiled today an enormous lineup of speakers
for the upcoming 2011 edition, with more than 100 speakers (currently 110), from Montréal and Canada of course, but also a solid contingent of speakers from Europe and the USA in open source software, web technologies, php, ruby, python etc.
110 speakers is a lot for a 3 day conference, practically twice as much
as this year's. Attendees will have to miss a majority of the presentations. I just hope we will find out a way to get the best presentations, such as pointing out those who will be there to teach and help attendees about a new technology, compared to those who'd just be there to sell out what they are doing (or sell who Read more…
2059This week's startup event is LeWeb
, currently underway in Paris, France.
The event features an impressive lineup, and is one of Europe's biggest startups conference, gathering european angels, VCs, entrepreneurs and of course the startup ecosystem such as bloggers, media, star developers etc. It's an excellent opportunity for Montréalers who wish to go international, with a warm welcome from Europeans, since Montréal is often seen as the bridge to North America.
Noticeable roundtables yesterday included discussions about wikileaks, and the steps taken by various Internet giants to neutralize its online tools. The crowd booed Paypal's VP, who followed the US State Department. In a conference which represents the future of the web, wikileaks is seen as the modern Robin Hood, and the general opinion is that transparency needs to win against secrecy, not far away from the wikipedia and other crowdsourcing revolutions. Who knows, maybe we will have crowdsourced governments soon...

As told by netfirms sponsor, Wordpress is the #1 installed blogging and cms software. It has been embraced by corporations, consultants, SMBes, but also big publishing companies such as Wall Street Journal or LeMonde.fr. I know it's my #1 recommended software for anyone wanting a web presence, with a website and a template up up in less than a couple of hours. As a matter of fact, its ubiquitous presence made competitors focus instead on niche markets, and made entrepreneurs go to other areas, such as mobile development or facebook/social applications development.
That's why WordCampMontreal
was in my top conferences to go this summer. It's great to see again the early adopters who I already met 5 years ago (although not all of them
), when Wordpress was still up against blogspot (or even movabletype and livejournal). But Read more…
