echofab, mini makerfaire, foulab, robotics hackathon: hardware hacking on the rise

echofab, mini makerfaire, foulab, robotics hackathon: hardware hacking on the rise 4675The first hardware hacking space was foulab in Montreal, started a couple of years ago. Supported and run by its members, it allows anyone who likes to play with electronics, use heavy machinery, order or find exotic parts, and generally talk with similarly-minded hackers. Recently, foulab got also their own 3D printers. Since then, more events and organizations started developing: robotics hackathon recently, with about 100 young and old robotics fans learning board programming and robot assembling. In other parts of Montreal, we've seen also the fantastic initiative echofab, the first fablab space in the city. It's similar to Foulab, but with the mindset that it's about creative craftsmanship, and less about the underground and exclusive hacking attitude. Landmine Awareness Game to Be Developed By RHOK Montreal

Landmine Awareness Game to Be Developed By RHOK Montreal 4560RHOK Montreal is hoping to bring new innovation to the old unexploded ammunition problem by teaming up with game developer Ahmed Mansour (@OLPCMorocco). Random Hacks of Kindness is all about developing high-tech solutions that help solve real life problems, especially in developing countries. IAU reports that in Iraq alone between 48,000 and 68,000 people have undergone amputations due to Unexploded Ordonances (UXO) and landmines. In regions like Kurdistan 24% of victims were children. Report also stipulates that children are not educated enough about the dangers of landmines and UXOs. Game developer Ahmed Mansour (Morocco) had an idea for an educational game that teaches kids how to avoid landmines that still litter many parts of the world. He assumed that it's a perfect fit for programs like Computer Aid International (@Computer_Aid) that donate used computers to people in 3rd world countries. Frank & Oak aims to deliver home high-quality clothing, hassle-free

frank & oak 4343A new Modasuite venture, Frank & Oak has just launched this week a new service to deliver affordable and high-quality clothes to its customers. What's interesting from other known made to measure sites like Modasuite or Indochino is the approach: it's presented like a SaaS service, a commodity where guests select the "level of service" they would like, and then customers don't have to worry anymore what best fits them, nor spend time shopping, or loose valuable time finding the most appropriate item. It's convenient and customers will get directly at home new items every month. For pricing, they only get to pay what they keep. There's a consistent attention to detail to the venture, beginning from the design of the site, to interactions, and even for the items: they are designed and manufactured by the Montreal workshop, a bold choice in the fashion industry. Everything else is meant   Read more…
