Montreal Tech Watch

Next thursday Dec 1st is the finale of the Angel Investor challenge AngesFinanciers, a joint venture between La Jeune Chambre de Commerce de Montréal and AngesQuebec. Run every year, the contest aims to interest all entrepreneurs, from all horizons, and get them to submit their business plans. The winners will get to present their project to a big event, where a crowd of 50 to 70 private investors are invited, with then the opportunity for entrepreneurs to network, win interest, convince and (maybe) get funding from angel investor.

For those who are new to the program, here’s an interview of JCCM president Cynthia Salian and AngesQuebec president François Gilbert on Canal Argent.

13 Selected ventures

The finalists for the challenge were announced a few weeks ago, and it’s a mix of clean/biotech/tech ventures, with mobile and web tools thrown in:

If you go through the sites, you will see that Invup does a web platform that makes philantropy fun and engaging. Ambroise is a restaurant point-of-sale system for iOS devices. Monumental Technologies does a cool Augmented Reality merch app for musicians. CalendarSpots is an online tool to arrange business meetings. It’s quite interesting that while the JCCM is targeted at young enterprising montréalers (without necessarily targeting “tech”), most of the projects have a strong technology component.

Most of those new projects don’t have a finished website though, and many are still putting together their set of services.  And while we can see a glimpse of the vision, many projects still need a little bit of work in terms of presenting their product. Their challenge would be to put everything online next thursday! That day, many small and big investors will want to see the best teams and bet on the the best project.

Open to all Entrepreneurs: An opportunity to learn

The Dec 1st event is also open to all entrepreneurs, at a special $55 rate. AngesFinanciers offers them the opportunity to discover which are the most interesting project that Angels like, and thus learn from the process. So if you have a project in mind, and if you need funding, it’s a good idea to check out the event, so you get the best preparation for next year’s program.

You will also discover the project that gets the “Coup de coeur” prize from AngesQuébec.
