Montreal Tech Watch

For those looking to integrate accelerator programs, it’s good to know there are many prospects worldwide, and StartupChile is one of the new programs making new headlines. They just announced yesterday the final list of startups coming in Chile, and there’s 3 startups from Montréal.

The first is Alteneo Digital, a media play looking to build a publishing platform, with a free and paying components. The application is at a very good time for Alteneo, since they’ve just unveiled their site, and were looking for the first funds to fund development, as well as fund business development.

The second is Bespoke mobility, which as the name suggests, is a mobile play, with the goal of working on contextual data to send relevant data to mobile applications. It’s an ambitious venture, and like Alteneo, StartupChile comes at a good time, extending their runway a little bit more.

The third startup is Art Sumo, which you’ve seen around, if you go to local events. Art Sumo is more mature than the two other startups, but since it’s focused on international markets, ArtSumo can use the opportunity to connect with other entrepreneurs, and (maybe) work on the Latin America market.

Each startup will get $40k of equity-free seed capital, and like many other accelerator programs, there’s a huge focus on networks, mentorships, and business connections. StartupChile’s goal is in fact gathering all those tech entrepreneurs in the same location, and with the intensity and focus it will generate, hope to recreate a mini Silicon Valley. With 145 applications accepted, that’s probably more any other program.

As for Montréal entrpereneurs, it’s a good way to kickstart their company. I know 3 other teams applied for the program, so that’s quite a good 50% success rate (probably more applied though…). Congrats to all 3 accepted teams.

Startups solve problems. So if you find a problem there’s probably a startup idea lying somewhere nearby. A Montreal developer Kenji Williams developed an app called twtspire.com that scours twitter and automatically detects tweets from people that wonder why a solution doesn’t exist for a specific problem they’re having. Here are example of tweets from [...]

This is good news for the companies involved, but I’m surprised that they couldn’t get equivalent funding here in Montreal.

I wonder: what benefit will they get from being in Chile that they can’t get here?

the value proposition, process and conditions are different, plus the relationship with the program manager is also different

Plus of course there are still many unfunded projects in montreal.

Congrats to the 3 Montreal companies. Come back to Montreal soon. We need to keep our startup/tech reputation growing here.
