Montreal Tech Watch

We’re excited to bring a new event that aims to bridge the gap between tech entrepreneurs and lawyers. The event is called LawyersLounge, and as the name suggests, is an opportunity for entrepreneurs to connect with Montréal lawyers and get answers from their legal questions.

The event is planned Sep 27th and is done in association with Mike Citrome from Spiegel Sohmer, and the NewTech group. Mike recently co-organized IgniteMontreal 2011, while most know about NewTech events, such as the NewTech demos, co-founders and TheBugHunt.

The event will have a series of presentations for tech startups, with advice on how to setup your company, dealing with your co-founders, local agreements, as well a presentation from a local successful tech entrepreneur. Here’s the list:

Frank Zylberberg – a Beginner’s Guide To Setting Up Your Company

Adam Saskin – What Start-Up Entrepreneurs Need To Know About Non-Competition Agreements (Especially While You Have a Day Job)

Michael Citrome – How To Fire Your Partner (And Own The Company)

Alexandre Dufresne – Bringing Your Startup to Montreal

As you can see, there are keynotes for basic legal advice, but also interesting keynotes for those who’ve been already there. After the presentations, there is also ample time to connect with lawyers, where you can freely ask questions to the various experts in the room, and get answers.

Due to the event, we’re organizing this at Phillips Lounge. The event will be capped at 60 (register now!). There’s also a $2 fee for the ticket, just to make sure only interested entrepreneurs come to the event. The fee is donated to charity though, and drinks and snacks are sponsored by organizers.

This is an unbelievable opportunity, knowing how much legal advice can cost you (either a hefty invoice or your business :)

If you are starting your business, and begin having various finance and business partners, getting proper advice for legal agreements.

Startups solve problems. So if you find a problem there’s probably a startup idea lying somewhere nearby. A Montreal developer Kenji Williams developed an app called twtspire.com that scours twitter and automatically detects tweets from people that wonder why a solution doesn’t exist for a specific problem they’re having. Here are example of tweets from [...]

Looking forward to this one. Haven’t seen a lot of events that bridge the gap between startups/entrepreneurs and the legal field, really worth attending !

I’d really like to attend but can’t. Are the presentations going to be recorded on video and made available on the web later? That would be really great for people like me who can’t attend, or just for people who find out about this later? Or will the slides at least be posted? Something along those lines would be really appreciated.

    Hi Christian
If there are slides, we will find a way to post them online, but of course the best way is live (the event is made to connect with lawyers).
About recording, we haven’t planned this. Maybe if there is more people wanting to se the videos, we’ll find a way to organize this.

Thank you for the event. We talked with Mike and got a lot of information on exactly what we needed.

There was a book that seemed very interesting mentioned in the last segment of the last presentation, anyone remember what the title was ?

  • Heri September 29, 2011

    Great, glad you liked it.

The book is “Venture Deals”. Can’t remember the authors’ name though

  • Christian September 29, 2011

Any update on availability of the slides? Thanks.
