Whenever you have an older couple with matching caps you know there’s going to be an interesting story. Especially when you meet them at a Notman house BBQ event which attracts some of the most promising and successful entrepreneurs.

When I asked if they’re a Start-Up, Sandra laughed and said “no, we’re more like End Ups”. This is because they have been writing travel guides for almost 3 decades, selling thousands of books every year. Currently they are in the top 5 percent of best-selling authors in their niche specializing in the “off-the-beaten-path” travel guides.

They skip big cities like New-York and San-Fransisco and instead focus on smaller cities which are found along the i-95 interstate. They dig up these small nuggets of gold and pour their knowledge onto print.

What surprised me is their ability to see the future of travel guides. They realized early that print publications are slowly giving way to digital press. Now their biggest challenge is find out how to best utilize their printed content on-line.

I really wanted them to talk with Evan Prodromou of Status.net, who’s an expert on on-line travel guides, but he came 20 minutes after they left.

I wish them continued success and I’m sure this is not the last time I hear of this energetic duo.
