Montreal Tech Watch

In an IT world hammered again and again by trends like cloud computing, usedservers.ca is a curious play. Many IT directors got already memos about moving their servers to the cloud and also using cloud services instead of buying good old software. It’s easy to forget though that outside the world of web startups, cloud computing is still a rarity (dare I say anomaly), and the vast majority of small and large businesses do not run on the cloud, for absolutely good reasons. That’s where usedservers comes in.

usedservers.ca

UsedServers is based in Montreal, and sells second-hand servers, networking equipment such as routers and switches. With a warehouse in the city, they can ship anywhere in Canada, with a guaranteed 24h delivery service in Montreal. All hardware listed on the site come with a 30 day warranty, plus UsedServers staff can also install the equipment in your data center.

UsedServers.ca should interest web hosting companies looking for relatively cheap hardware, and also specialized companies who need to colocate their IT infrastructure, such as ecommerce companies, finance, or any other technology firm who need specialized servers not available on the market. It’s also a good way to save on hosting costs, since you can rent a 1U spot with network & electricity for very cheap.

UsedServers is a venture by Andrey Shcherbakov, a serial technology entrepreneur. Like many of his other successful ventures, UsedServers is not going to be a major startup with exponential growth, but is a good example of a niche service, with an established and successful business model bringing in solid cash… and sometimes, that’s only what you need!

Startups solve problems. So if you find a problem there’s probably a startup idea lying somewhere nearby. Quick response to the article:
Just a clarification we do help people with cloud solutions. Our higher end 8 core servers are perfect as hypervizors or virtualization and from time to time we get higher Storage Area Network (SAN) packages…. ie DELL AX4-5I, EMC Clariion…etc (mind you these do not last a long time so you need to call us about SAN since we usually wont have time to list it on the website). We saved our clients tens of thousands of dollars on cloud solutions.

    To Mikes question regarding quality.
We only buy server hardware from a working environment/end of lease/upgrade/ move to a cloud … or open box unused. And we test all servers. At this point we are only buying servers that support virtualization.
