Montreal Tech Watch

This will surely be the most exciting and most popular app in Montréal this month, if it holds its promise of letting users view in real-time the hottest parties in Montréal nightclubs. Picture St-Laurent on a Friday night, with exuberant, excited and young party-goers queuing up at a trendy bar, only to discover a loud and empty room. It’s always a bet, somehow frustrating when you were made to wait outside at -30C and then had to pay for entrance … all forgotten somehow after a couple of drinks.

But this is all history! Adrien Hembert is the youth’s saver with new iPhone app WeNite which will list the hottest nightclubs in town. The app gets the ranking from several criteria: attendance, good vibes, gender ratio, and “level of seduction”. Tap a nightclub on your mobile phone, and you will get real-time data about those 4 criterias, essential for the party-goer’s enjoyement. When they get into a club, users can also login and send his/her own vote, a simple but smart way to leverage crowd-sourcing.

WeNite development was started last year in Montréal, with the help of advertising, media professionals and video games developers. Groupe WeNite Inc. hopes to expand soon Toronto, Vancouver and soon European and American cities.

Of course, this is not ground-breaking technology, but I like the orientation of building something from the beginning that aims to solve a practical problem. It goes beyond the simplish check-in functionality of foursquare, turning it into something actually useful.
