THE BONERY

The Bonery is an online key-value store, designed for sys-admins and developers so that they can have environment variables and server configuration data in the cloud, and not anymore on a single computer. At its core, it’s a key-value store, a thin HTTP wrapper around Redis, avalaible online with an API key. It bonery was only released publicly last week by Delano Mandelbaum after 1 year of inhouse testing.

It’s a fitting piece of equipment for those who have to setup frequently applications and servers. It might not be much use for a single developer who controls one application on one single server, but as we move to more complex applications, with cloud providers such as Amazon EC2 requiring advanced sysadmin skills, the Bonery looks like it will solve lots of headaches in deployment — and will also save you when servers crash and you have to get instances up as soon as possible.

I’m wondering how IT directors will deal with having a third-party provider handling all of your system’s most important information, but I guess in 20102011 everyone is now used to have everything in the cloud… or are they?

Head over to the Bonery to try it out. It works out of the box with Ruby. Delano (@solutious) is also looking for feedback; and contributors for the Python and javascript versions.

Startups solve problems. So if you find a problem there’s probably a startup idea lying somewhere nearby. A Montreal developer Kenji Williams developed an app called twtspire.com that scours twitter and automatically detects tweets from people that wonder why a solution doesn’t exist for a specific problem they’re having. Here are example of tweets from [...]

    The “Bonery”? Seriously?

Any sysadmin or techie will have a hard time keeping a straight face when pitching the “Bonery” to their team or manager.

(Plus I’m sure there’s plenty of existing “Bonery”-themed ASCII “art” that could’ve been used for a more telling logo)

re: The “Bonery”? Seriously?, many of my projects are named after TV characters. Rudy from the Cosby show. Gibbler from Full House. The Bonery and Bone, the project it’s based on, were named after a character in Growing Pains: Richard ‘Boner’ Stabone.
