Montreal Tech Watch

Track your time with DumpYourTime.com

By Julien Desrosiers Aug 3rd 2010 in Uncategorized

Editor’s note: I am introducing today a new MTW section dedicated to the hundreds of projects in Montréal, who aren’t yet ready to be featured at mtlnewtech or to be funded by investors, or be featured on MTW. It’s meant for all developers who have a running prototype, or maybe an entrepreneur who has a landing page and sketches of a website but not yet a running application with users. The purpose is to show the diversity of what’s being done in Montréal, and also give a voice to struggling or new entrepreneurs who are looking for help from the community.

Since there is going to be strong interest for this new feature, not all proposals will be published on MTW. I expect to only publish a post every other day, which means only posting the most innovative projects. Every filled form will be saved and taken very seriously though, and if there is any help MTW can provide, well… help will be provided, connections will be made. I, more than anyone else here in Montréal, knows how much effort it requires to start and work on a project. Who knows, by publishing it here on MTW, you’ll get noticed by expert talent, investors, or you’ll get that first wave of users validating your idea.

How it works: fill out this form. Answers will be recorded, and it will be posted as is on MTW, giving you a perfect opportunity to pitch your product in front of the MTW audience, with your own words.

Today’s post is about DumpYourTime. Since it’s the first, it’s not perfect, but I know Julien Desrosiers for years and he’s one of Montréal’s talented hackers. So when he launches a side-project, I do notice.

Thanks to Heri for giving me this opportunity to tell you about something that will save you some time (literally); DumpYourTime.com.

Why did i created DumpYourTime?
As a freelance Web developer, i’ve been looking for a tool that’s cheap and that lets me enter my time for my freelance and  personal projects.
I know there are a lot of other time tracking apps out there, but i wanted something in which i can enter the time i begin to work… then work… then enter the time at which i’m done. And easily enter past hours (Using a timer was out of question).

It’s simple to use!
There are only 2 sections: Projects and Intervals.
You create as many projects as your want, and in Intervals, you enter (or dump) your time on each projects.

Will it be free forever?
Right now it’s in Beta. So it’s free. But i have plans for offering premium accounts if some people are actually using it, but in the meantime, i’m working on the idea and trying to get as much user feedback as possible. So mail me at hello [At] juliendesrosiers.com if you have any comments!

About the creation of this application.
I build this app with Ruby on Rails. I worked on this project during weekends. And it didn’t take a lot of time to get to something that we could use because it’s crazy fast to develop with Rails.

That’s it. I hope you’ll find it useful!

As written above, save the form link, bookmark it or send it to your fellow friends needing exposure.
