Montreal Tech Watch

I’m seeing lots of strong activity in Montréal in technology and new early stage ventures recently.

FlowVentures, which supports early stage ventures, has opened a jobs site, thanks to standoutjobs. It features jobs and opportunities in startups they are working with, from .NET programmers, front-end designers, project managers, etc. This is a clear demonstration on how startups and emerging tech companies are actively on the outlook for talent.

See also the jobs section on TechEntreprise, which has regular job listings.

MontrealStartup, which funds early stage ventures as angels, has just listed on their blog the new ventures they have funded in. It’s a great list, from consumer to B2B plays, from retail to media to software. You already knew about standoutjobs, akoha, identi.ca, but there are also a list of stealth and public ventures in the list.

Events are also organized non-stop in Montréal, gathering entrepreneurs, social media types, hackers, service providers. I call now Felipe Coimbra an event machine :-), he’s doing Montreal New Tech, where new startups are showcased every month, and also the co-founders metup. Go check out Montreal New Tech. Of course, there is still StartupDrinks, which gathers 50+ people every month, the tech breakfast, which gathers even more people, freehackers yulhackers, and the various montrealonrails / montrealpython / phpquebec meetups.

As demonstrated by recent news, the video games industry is also expanding.

There is now a good mix of programmers with killer talent, many focused entrepreneurs (compared to previous years where most wondered how to deal with an Internet company), and lots of new ventures.

Of course, we could use more intensity, more entrepreneurs, maybe a BarCampMontreal (and then some), but so far, it’s great to see how things are doing in Montreal.

Startups solve problems. So if you find a problem there’s probably a startup idea lying somewhere nearby. A Montreal developer Kenji Williams developed an app called twtspire.com that scours twitter and automatically detects tweets from people that wonder why a solution doesn’t exist for a specific problem they’re having. Here are example of tweets from [...]
