Je suis cependant fière de prendre ma place sur le Web en tant que francophone. Je trouve ridicule de voir autant de francophones se positionner presque exclusivement en anglais sur ces médias.

This is an interesting post, and since the language issue has never been addressed on MontrealTechWatch, I thought it would be the time to do so. There have been a few posts on MTW written in French, and there have been efforts to write more of these, but English comes back naturally.

One fundamental reason is that most products and services who are the subject of the articles are geared to an international audience, most notably the U.S. Using English is an opportunity then to begin a conversation with potential partners, customers, or (gasp!) competitors. Of course, it would be good if everyone in Québec was aware that there is a new innovative product “made in Québec” but chances are they will be an infime part of your user/customer base.

But there are many technology blogs written in French, you would say. However, some of these blogs have a business focus, while the rest of them are geared towards vulgarizing technology. The real core reason, and I hope you guessed it, is that MontrealTechWatch is focused on technology; and one topic that dominates here is software and people who practise and produce software (even if there is no code, as the blog must stay accessible). And I have to say it’s impossible to write about software and programming in French.

This doesn’t mean the Internet or social media have to be in any way in English (and it shouldn’t be). If programming languages were all in japaneese, this blog would be in japaneese.
