On a very loosely related note, Heri, I noticed that the Google Webmaster Tools now allow you to specify a geo-target for your site(s). I guess MTW would be a prime candidate for that.

I’d certainly like to help. I even have some code (php, still counts) laying around that does most of this that was used to map about 200 free software / open source companies (where the link to free software was very loosely defined).

microformats (hcard), georss, kml, geourl, geocoder.ca… and I recently found a heatmap service that could come really handy to show $$ or number of employees density, for example.

Great work yet again, keep it up :)

thanks, (although I am not sure if keeping a kml source file is scalable if we hit more than 100+ companies)

by the way, it just unlisted the map, mainly because it’s still in draft version and also because there are a couple of errors on it.

Also, you should keep the option open to import a batch of locations from a microformatted xhtml source or a KML file, might come handy one day…

Yes, it’s a new feature of Google Maps, when you search it also gives you the “community” maps after the standard results. If you search for a business name with few entries in it (like Praized par exemple) you can find map that uses it, if the author has not checked the “privacy” option to be “unlisted”.

Very cool Heri. I’ve been meaning to do the exact same thing for awhile (I was interested in finding the Mtl Tech Startup scene’s center of mass). Oh well, guess I’ll have to find some other excuse to play with the gmap api :-)
