Montreal Tech Watch

Praized Media who just went beyond their stealth phase is looking for a lead engineer, and a front-end web developer who can work with the Ruby on Rails framework. On the other hand, Standoutjobs is also charming hunting opening a position for another Ruby programmer in their team, which I don’t understand by the way because they don’t even have a designer in the team.

A couple of weeks ago, Akoha also posted 2 positions to get a junior python programmer and a senior graphic designer. This left me wondering seriously if I should open a job board on Montreal Tech Watch for this kind of jobs (and more), although I am not sure if it should be done from scratch or just pick a standard service from the web like simplyhired. Does anyone have experience in job boards? What’s your best solution?

Startups solve problems. So if you find a problem there’s probably a startup idea lying somewhere nearby. A Montreal developer Kenji Williams developed an app called twtspire.com that scours twitter and automatically detects tweets from people that wonder why a solution doesn’t exist for a specific problem they’re having. Here are example of tweets from [...]

Who says we don’t have a designer? *smile*

And why did you cross out “charming” and “hunting”? I quite like those terms…

So you want to compete with Standout Jobs? /joke

Job boards fill up with head hunters fast enough, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing for some, but lowers the quality of jobs offered in general. I’d prefer for you to be the filter and at least to have something good to post about :-) (three cheers for delegation!)

Like Chris said, I think it’s great to have a job board (or even a help wanted section) but you better approve everything before it’s posted.

Ben: so you have a stealth designer? whose name is…

    Chris&Daniel: it’s not a competition with standoutjobs

on their website, they have *star* jobs globally, while the job board here will be less ambitious, it will be local, and it doesn’t have to be about ruby gurus or lead engineers.

of course, it will be filtered out if there is an abuse, either by manual selection or by paying for the listing. but I am still considering options

Heri – His name is Mr. Designer. OK, not really…we’ll make an announcement soon enough.

Certainly a job board here wouldn’t be competitive with Standout Jobs. In fact, we’d probably work together.

I think a local job board is a good idea. Why not right? You have a solid, local audience, targeted in the tech industry…

There are tools out there like JobThread and JobCoin that allow you to setup job boards fairly easily. I believe Fred Ngo found an open source one as well.

Or you could use SimplyHired’s Job-o-Matic.

In many cases, on niche blogs, the answer to “should I have a job board?” is “Sure, why not?” I’m fine with that…not an unreasonable answer.

Since your blog is neutral ground: I’m going to hijack your post to point out that we (Fjord Interactive) are also looking for a couple of talented individuals to join the family. :-)

The description for the first candidate is up on my freshly refreshed blog: http://blog.crowdedweb.com/2007/9/18/web-enthusiasts-need-apply

I haven’t yet put up the description for the second position, but it’s for a UI designer + integrator.

So if any of you reading this fit the bill, feel the description above appeals to you, and feel that the startup scene is not really right for you but want to work with passionate people nonetheless, feel free to hit me up at bosko.milekic at gmail dot com.

Just add a category called “jobs” and ask people to send html formatted offer to you by email. Simple and efficient. SimplyHired is nice (they are a fellow Garage funded company) but I tested their jobamatic and it requires a city in the US to work correctly…

http://hiddennetwork.com/ and http://www.jobcoin.com/ look like two intersting alternatives… I’ve got an invite from hiddennetwork I wanted to test for a while but never got to it (yet).
