Vox’s lame try at TV2.0 (1)

VOX tv channel, which is a full subsidiary of Québecor Media unveiled this week their schedule for this fall. Isabelle Dussareault, one of their VP said they are the first TV company in Québec to try user participation, à la web2.0. What she means is that they will broadcast shows made by their audience, and most of their home-produced shows will also interact tightly with the public.
For some, it might be considered as a way to get a free lunch. But you can also consider it as a way for unknown videographers to get their work published. Either way, their formula is far from perfect, years away from what CURRENT TV is doing. Using PDF and MS Word docs is lame, and so is their website, which is mostly brochureware.

I think Musique Plus was first with “user content” (thanks to Meïdia). But as far as I know (yeah, I know quite a bit) Vox is trying hard to get to 2.0, let’s just say their roots are from the télé-communautaire era, so their incremental progress to evolve really started from TV 0.5 so I guess we can say they are going towards TV 1.5 for now ;-)
Full disclosure, my wife is working part time with them to help them bridge TV and Web, she started late in the process and was quite overwhelmed by the cultural challenges (a tv crew is not a web development team), she’s trying hard and the VOX team and management are quite open to suggestions.
The proof will be in the pudding, as always.
