First iPhone user in Montreal

By Heri Aug 30th 2007 in Mobile

La Presse Affaires has a story about a Montréaler, “Marc-André”, who had an iPhone working with Rogers’ mobile network. He had everything working, from the EDGE internet access, SMS, to the google maps. Visual Voice Mail, a proprietary feature by AT&T, is not avalaible.

“Marc-André”, whose job is in real estate, used a special SIM card and apparently just took 3 hours to get everything working. The reporter mentions at the end the phone’s official avalaibility in Canada — something that you should take with a grain of salt.

Startups solve problems. So if you find a problem there’s probably a startup idea lying somewhere nearby. A Montreal developer Kenji Williams developed an app called twtspire.com that scours twitter and automatically detects tweets from people that wonder why a solution doesn’t exist for a specific problem they’re having. Here are example of tweets from [...]

I’m not really impressed. All he did was put a SIM card in his iPhone and run a few commands to have it unlocked. It’s not like he actually invented the hack or modified the device’s hardware…

  • Heri August 30, 2007

hi alex, I am not impressed too, although you have to be courageous to play a “hack” on a $700+ device.

but the post just proves one point. if you are a die-hard apple fan, you can now use an iPhone in Montrelaé.

Hello the the 400$/month bill; data plans in Canada are ones of the worst in the world. Seriously is the CRTC is sleeping or what. Maybe it’s because the governemant still want his part over the taxes on our big bills.

  • Heri September 02, 2007

Hi Max, that’s precisely why I said you should take talks about iphones in canada with a grain of salt. For me, it’s very unlikely that Rogers or Fido will make it avalaible one day. Knowing too well telcos in Canada, i know they will ask for the high price with Apple. Then they will want to get more profits with the data plans, which as you say will get customers bills as high as $400.

unfortunately, like in internet, I believe the CRTC can’t do much. PKP, head of Québecor said the current telecom companies have formed an oligarchy and I believe he has a correct assessment
