RFIDTribe coming in Montreal

By Heri Aug 15th 2007 in Events

rfid tribe

RFID Tribe, a “global organization with local chapters” is starting a local group in Montreal, with 60 registered members so far. It aims at connecting its members on business and technical matters.

Seems to me a good initiative, although I have no idea where they come from, and what is exactly RFID Tribe’s objectives. The announcement seems to be a plain copy&paste, and there isn’t even a name on who will be organizing this in Montreal. I mean, I can also setup a portal in a few hours, find a fancy “global” name for instance “Wimax Developers” and throw another couple of fancy words, and announce on the Internet the creation of a “chapter” in Bangkok, Thailand, even though I am in Montreal.

Startups solve problems. So if you find a problem there’s probably a startup idea lying somewhere nearby. A Montreal developer Kenji Williams developed an app called twtspire.com that scours twitter and automatically detects tweets from people that wonder why a solution doesn’t exist for a specific problem they’re having. Here are example of tweets from [...]

RFID Tribe seems suspicious to me. The acronym is not even described. And they sell this report about their members for 99$…
If they are in fact bs, then they have succeeded in propagating a fell of reality (i.e. you post helps them)

oups… I commented too fast: RFID is “radio frequency identification”.

    Hi guys,

I feel I need to step in and comment.

The RFID Tribe is a worldwide organisation with local chapters. Currently, over 3000 people are members (membership is free). If you want more information about the Tribe, you will find it on its Website.

The Montreal’s chapter objectives (of which I am the chapter leader) is to connect people locally who are interested in the technology. Everyone is invited to participate. People/organisations from Québec who have already registered to the event are end-users, consultants, researchers, investors, systems integrators, manufacturers, etc.

The event on the 5th of September is very real and was not initiated by some obscure organization in Bangkok as I am based locally :-)

If you want to know more about the event or plan on attending : http://www.rfidtribe.com/montreal

If you want to contact me, my contact information is here. I’d be more than happy to answer any questions you might have about the Tribe, or RFID technology in general.
