Montreal Tech Watch

Introducing OpenSpace

By Heri Jun 20th 2007 in Open Source

There is a new section in Montreal Tech Watch called OpenSpace, which is a blog editable by everyone … editable as in wiki. You can also see it as a wiki, but with blog features.

This means that any user of this website can create a new post/page, and edit other posts. Of course, other users can do the same thing too, and especially update the page you have just written, and that’s the point. All posts and updates are then auto-published on Montreal Tech Watch’s right sidebar.

I am sure you have many questions so here are some answers

* why? this is an experiment. You can see it as a bet too. either way, I want to see how people in Montreal and in Quebec would use it.
* who? this is for anyone who want to write and exchange about technology in Montreal. It can be also used by companies or people who don’t have a website or a blog and they still want to tell about a new product or a new technology they have seen.
* how? it’s very easy, you don’t have to login or register. you can edit any post or create a new page. just follow the link
* what? any content about technology, entrepreneurship, web applications, be it in french or in english

This is of course an alpha version – it’s building up as we speak. The design and features are rough and the integration well… it sort of works. The content will be there too – to get it going, I’ll post there instead of tumblr.

About the wiki/blog concept, the concept is new. I know Evan Prodromou uses a wiki/blog for his website, but it’s his personal website, and it would be weird for anyone else to update his website. IA Japan is planning to use the same concept for a major newspaper in the US has done the same thing for dasmagazine.ch, a swiss magazine, by using mediawiki.

Any comments or questions appreciated. And if you don’t like it or don’t see the point, leave a comment too on why.

Startups solve problems. So if you find a problem there’s probably a startup idea lying somewhere nearby. A Montreal developer Kenji Williams developed an app called twtspire.com that scours twitter and automatically detects tweets from people that wonder why a solution doesn’t exist for a specific problem they’re having. Here are example of tweets from [...]

    - A website is never done with its user interface, but this one is very ripe.
    - And hey, who said that we are working for an US newspaper?

I think it depends on the individuals. But then I think that at any time you clearly define what’s in scope and what’s out of scope for each person’s role with the project to begin with it can do the job.
