Dr. Claude Frasson has started March 15th uMind, a company specializing in e-learning software. It will sell 2 products, uSim and uLearn, that are marketed as intelligent software.

The company is the result of 10 years in Research and Development. The goal was to produce a software that could adapt, understand, and respond to human behaviour, instead of the learner having to adapt to the software. For instance, Aimy, which is a virtual teacher, will guide and assist the learner during the learning phase. She is operated by Artifical Intelligence.

I have to admit I have no first-hand experience with Artifical Intelligence. The most I did was creating, studying and using neural networks. It was hard and arduous as you had to be a first-class mathematician, master computer science and have deep knowledge of neurology. We achieved to make a neural network that could recognize image patterns, and well that was it. Neural networks and HMMs are child’s play compared to Artifical Intelligence.

On the other hand, Dr. Claude Frasson is a world-renowned scientist in Artifical Intelligence and Learning. He founded the Intelligent Tutoring System Conference, is a special advisor for the United Nations and the World Bank, and teaches at Université de Montréal, where he also heads various hi-tech laboratories. Oh well, I just have to say it’s nice to see an academia entrepreneur of his stature. For those of you who think there is no world-class tech innovation in Montreal, this has just proven the contrary.

Startups solve problems. So if you find a problem there’s probably a startup idea lying somewhere nearby. A Montreal developer Kenji Williams developed an app called twtspire.com that scours twitter and automatically detects tweets from people that wonder why a solution doesn’t exist for a specific problem they’re having. Here are example of tweets from [...]

    Hey Heri,

Right on! There is no doubt that Montreal is full of talent; be it in multimedia dev, or neural engineering!

I love your blog, love the concept, makes me proud to be a Montrealer. Actually, I’m a first timer, I got here by doing some SEO monitoring and got quite a few hits from your domain. See, I actually work at uMind, and rather than just swing by, I thought I’d leave a note.

    Be back soon,
    Dave

    Hola:
